When you’re faced with difficult situations and failures you have two choices: you can let them overcome you and drain your resolve or you can use them as an opportunity and a stepping stone to take decisive action. People who are mentally tough always choose the second option.
Just like you can’t become physically strong overnight, building mental muscle requires hard work, self-discipline, dedication, and patience. It also necessitates better emotion management skills and making changes to your attitudes and toxic habits that deprive you of your mental abilities. Once you master this, you’ll be able to reach your greatest potential.
Mentally tough people are unique and stand out from the rest because they possess the following 8 qualities:
1. They are in control of their lives.
They’re the masters of their own lives. Instead of waiting for someone else to do things for them or solve their problems, they create opportunities for themselves. They’re highly adaptable and always willing to make the necessary changes which will allow them to overcome difficulties, grow personally and professionally, and become a better version of themselves.
2. They challenge themselves.
Mentally strong people believe and have confidence in their abilities and value. They know that they can always achieve more and become more successful at both personal and professional level. That’s why they aren’t afraid to set high goals, leave their comfort zone, explore other possibilities, and take risks.
3. They make the best of their situation.
A mentally tough person knows that the road to happiness and success is paved with many obstacles and failures. They make mistakes and fail to achieve goals just like everybody else, but they don’t let these decrease their self-esteem. They’re highly resilient and when they’re faced with an obstacle, they always find a way around it and soldier on.
4. Instead of complaining about bad situations, they make changes.
Mentally strong people don’t waste their time and energy focusing on their problems but redirect their attention to finding a solution. Instead of indulging in self-pity and complaining about how miserable their life is, they use all available resources to change the things that don’t work and get to the place they want to be in their lives.
5. They set clear boundaries.
They can tolerate many uncomfortable and problematic situations but they have limits too. They establish healthy physical and emotional boundaries because they know how important it is to have personal space and privacy. They make others aware that they won’t be always available to help or encourage them because they have their own needs, wishes, and issues to take care of.
6. They distance themselves from bad habits.
If it’s eating unhealthy food or having toxic relationships with someone, be that a partner, a family member, a friend, or a coworker that interferes with their personal and professional growth, mentally tough people aren’t reluctant to break these bad habits. They’re always willing to get rid of opinions, attitudes, and behaviors that limit their potential.
7. They distance themselves from toxic people as well.
A mentally tough person knows that toxic people are overwhelming and exhausting. If they sense that someone’s behavior is toxic they make sure they’re in total control of both their own and the other person’s feelings and reactions. They either respond to their words and actions reasonably and without losing their temper or simply disengage from the conversation.
8. They say “NO.”
Mentally tough people know their own worth and respect themselves. They won’t consent to do anything that is against their moral principles and values. Instead of saying “maybe” and pretending to be interested, they’ll say: “No, I can’t come to your birthday party” or “I can’t help you now” if they have other more important tasks to finish. They know that if they constantly satisfy other people’s needs and expectations, this will stress and exhaust them. Moreover, if they intend to do something and know it won’t be beneficial to them, they won’t hesitate to say “no” to themselves as well.
